NCCMHC Celebrates 40 years of Service by its President & CEO
L to R: James E. O'Neil, Mayor David N. Cicilline, J. Clement 'Bud' Cicilline, Susan Erstling and Francis 'Butch' Paranzino
Community Leaders, Colleagues, Family, Friends and Staff all gathered on November 14, 2008, at the Atlantic Beach Club to pay tribute to J. Clement 'Bud' Cicilline and to acknowledge his 40 years of outstanding service to the Newport County Community Mental Health Center and to the people of Newport County. Designed as a "Roast", the occasion certainly roused lots of laughter, remembering everything from Bud's college days at Providence College to his unique habit of going "sockless" from March to November to the time that he was "arrested" as a state senator while protesting a budget cut with a group of housing advocates at the State House.
James E. O'Neil, former Attorney General, acted as Roast Master and ran the evening's festivities with fun and expertise.Providence Mayor, David N. Cicilline, spoke first, presenting Bud with a Citation of Service and recalling many funny and fond family memories of growing up with his Uncle Bud.Francis 'Butch' Paranzino, NCCMHC VP and COO, walked a fine line between poking fun and keeping his comments well-mannered enough to assure he still had a job on Monday!Thomas D. Romeo, former Director of MHRH, had attendees laughing with an in-depth assessment of Bud's full name, and even supported his monologue with highly questionable props!Sen. M. Teresa Paiva Weed, newly endorsed for the position of Senate President, next spoke eloquently of Bud's many contributions to the state and to Newport County. The final Roaster, former Middletown Town Council President, Robert M. Silva, a long-time friend of Bud's from their Providence College days, resoundingly ended the evening with many a witticism and wisecrack to the crowd's approval.
Citations of recognition and appreciation were sent from Governor Donald L. Carcieri, Congressman Patrick J. Kennedy, Congressman James Langevin, Lt. Governor Elizabeth H. Roberts and Rep. J. Russell Jackson. The NCCMHC Board of Directors presented Bud with a striking Richard Grosvenor shoreline painting, which Bud accepted with heart-felt thanks. He then spoke most appreciatively of his time at NCCMHC, notably about the clients he has served over the years, about the many community groups with which he has worked and about his incomparable staff. He attributed whatever success he has enjoyed to the tremendous support he has had from so many other people, but he did single out Mrs. Gladys Fleming, his 3rd grade teacher who taught him spelling and grammar.
Truly a good time was had by all. We look forward to many more hard-working years ahead for Bud and again, thank him for all his efforts over the last 40 years. ________________________________________________________
